Condolence & Memory Journal

During the 18 years that I knew Harry, I will always remember our luncheon talks, where he entertained me with colorful antidotes of his past experiences, life in the Navy during WWII, struggles to create a successful business, and his love for his family. He was so very proud of his sons Junior and Jason for their successful development, and for helping him run the family business, something he could never have done alone. Sometimes with old fashioned 90-year-old dads, expressions of affection to their children can be rare, but for every lunch I had with Harry, he would always tell me how proud he was of Junior and Jason.

I remember an incident about 10 years ago, during noontime on the 4th of July at Westgate Lanes. Harry was not feeling well and had serious stomach pains. He refused to go to the hospital until Karen, the manager of Westgate Lanes at the time, called Pat in Florida. She was there on vacation with Jason and his family. Pat convinced Harry to allow Karen to call him an ambulance. After he left for the hospital, I stayed at Westgate Lanes until 5pm to play a little pool. Just as I left, Jason walked in the front door. As soon as he heard that his dad was sick, he dropped everything and took the next flight out of Florida to be with his dad. Harry was seriously ill, but fortunately recovered and was back at Westgate, to the joy of all his employees and customers.

Westgate Lanes was a family-run business, and with Harry's affable and welcoming personality he made all his customers feel like family too. Westgate Lanes was not just his business, it was his extended family. It had a sense of community where all could gather to bowl, play pool, or share their thoughts at the bar - like the TV show Cheers.

What is left to say except that Harry made everyone smile and his home was your home. Since I was 17, he made me feel like part of the family and the Lanes were my second home. Sorely missed, his gift of happiness and generosity with the younger crowd and Juniors program will be part of the memories I will continue to share with my children.

Harry was a wonderful man. I have fond memories spent with Harry and Pat while Jason and Kenny were playing baseball at Johnson and Wales. Spring training in Ft Meyers is among the memories. Harry always had a smile on his face. He always had great stories and we enjoyed many laughs. Harry is a great example of living life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed, but the stories will live on. My deepest sympathy to Pat, Jason, Marissa and family.
